The Motorola SURFboard SB5120 has earned CableLabs® Certification™ which makes it fully interoperable and compatible with all required components of next generation High - Speed Internet technologies and Internet access provider services. The CableLabs® Certification™ is achieved after being submitted to a battery of compliance tests. Motorola is the world's leading supplier of cable modems and digital set-tops. The following information will provide the details you need to purchase your modem and enhance your overall Comcast cable Internet access experience.
Next-Generation Technology
ComcastInfo utilizes only the top-tiered modem technology available, to ensure the smoothest Internet experience. The Motorola SURFboard SB5120 Cable Modem is next-generation modem technology that is built for today and equipped with a capacity for future Internet access provider system upgrades. It integrates the most recent DOCSIS™ Advanced Time Division Multiple Access and Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (S-CDMA) technologies in order to produce an upstream capacity which is three times greater than DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 systems.
Ease of Performance
Operators using the Motorola SURFboard SB5120 can count on an interoperable (and backward-compatible with DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1) Internet access that is unparalleled and uninterrupted. This allows for a seamless and rapid transition. Existing infrastructure investments will be maximized by implementation of the SB5120. End-user security is provided courtesy of a top-mounted stand-by switch which swiftly singles out the USB and Ethernet PC connection, with no possibility of disconnection of the modem from the RF network, ensuring the most secure channel of special service.

Troubleshooting is made easy with the front panel status indicator LEDs and integrated HTML diagnostics page.

Self-Installation Kit
Important Note* Be sure to keep all of the contents of your Self-Intallation Kit in a safe place. You will need to rerun the Installation CD during any future system upgrades or changes in hardware.
You may install and connect your modem in a few quick and easy steps. The cable is run to your cable modem situated next to your computer. Next, the cable modem is connected to your computer via a Network Interface Card (NIC) or Universal Serial Bus (USB) in your computer. It's as simple as that.
All computers come equipped with a network adaptor.
Either a:
- Network Interface Card, or NIC (aka: Ethernet card)
- Universal Serial Bus, or USB
The Motorola SURFboardSB5120 is compatible with Comcast, DSL service, dial-up internet access, other provider platforms.
Items included in the Comprehensive Self-Installation Kit
- Welcome Kit Envelope
- *Welcome Letter
- Subscriber Agreement
- Installation CD
- Cable Wire Bundle
- Splitter
- Short (3') coaxial cable
- Long (25') coaxial cable
You will need either an Ethernet Card or USB Port on your personal computer to hook up your system.
Ethernet Card
Also known as Network Interface Card (NIC). If you do not have one in your computer, it can be installed.
*When comparing download speeds with a traditional 28.8k analog modem. Actual speeds will vary, and are often less than the maximum possible. Upload and download speeds are affected by several factors including, but not limited to: network traffic and services offered by your cable operator or broadband service provider, computer equipment, type of server, number of connections to server, and availability of Internet router(s).
1. Check with your local cable operator to determine the number of connections allowed and associated service charges.
**Actual data throughput will be less due to physical layer overhead (error correction coding, burst preamble, and guard interval). ***With A-TDMA or S-CDMA enabled CMTS.
